First Attack Firefighting


Course Description:
This course provides the skills and knowledge required to enable you to:
  • Understand the principles and classes of fire
  • Select and use the correct fire extinguishers, blankets and hose reels on different classes of fire
  • Recognise common causes of workplace fires and prevention methods
  • Recognise the key actions in a fire emergency, commonly known by the acronym RACE
  • Risk assess workplace fires for risks presented
  • Learn key safety points for workplace fires

The following unit of competency is delivered by PWR RTO 45431. Successful completion of this course will provide a statement of attainment in the following unit(s) of competency:
  • CPPFES2005A Demonstrate first attack firefighting equipment

Target Audience:
This course has been developed to cater for corporate group bookings for those that are responsible for using various first attack firefighting equipment in emergency situations in the work place. It does not cover the competencies required to become a professional or volunteer firefighter. 


Course Delivery:
This course is delivered by a fully qualified industry professional using a blended learning method of theory and practical demonstrations and assessments.

Duration: 5 Hours (1/2 Day)

Pre-requisites - No individual public enrolments are taken for this course.

Refresher Training: The training industry recommends that workers retake this course every two (2) years to ensure they maintain their competency.

Student requirements:
Participants must:
  • Be at least 16 years of age or 18 years when participant is employed in the mining industry due to mining regulations
  • Supply their USI number on enrolment
  • Have sufficient English language, literacy and numeracy skills to read instructions and write assessments
  • Wear or bring; Site PPE or full-length clothing and closed in boots/shoes
  • Be reasonably fit and able to carry at least 10 kgs of weight
  • Be able to fulfil the requirements for first attack firefighting; including the physical capacity to assist others if required and mobility sufficient enough to adequately cover the workplace premise.
  • Be able to communicate well under potential stressors
  • Have good knowledge of emergency procedures
